PCB Finalizes Foolproof Plan to Keep Bookies Away From PSL
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has prepared a foolproof plan to keep bookies away from the sixth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Last year, Quetta Gladiators star, Umar Akmal, was suspended from the league after he was caught having connections with bookies. The management wants to avoid such controversies this year. Therefore, it has prepared a solid plan in this regard.
Speaking exclusively with an Urdu daily, Director Security, and Anti-Corruption, Lt. Col (retd) Asif Mehmood, said that the officials have already been briefed, and now the players will also be reminded of the anti-corruption lesson.
Pictures of suspicious people sent by the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit have been shown to players. We will also inform them about the people on our radar to be avoided.

Players have been asked to report any suspicious contact to the anti-corruption unit. Lt. Col (retd) Asif Mehmood said that there will be an integrity officer with each team on the hotel floor.
We are in touch with law enforcement agencies, they can also be called in if needed.
He said that since PSL is our domestic event, there would be no need for the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit to come. They used to be called observers, which will no longer be feasible given the coronavirus pandemic.

To a question whether the anti-corruption unit being unable to uncover the Umar Akmal case before the PSL last year was a failure, Asif Mehmood said:
This impression is not correct. We are always alert but cannot act merely on the information. Many times we have to wait for proof. So, we waited, and when we got poofs, we called Umar Akmal and questioned him over suspicious meetings, in which he admitted to getting two offers.
When asked if the board has solid evidence, he said:
We keep a record of every interview. There is also a video recording of Umar Akmal’s confessional statement. No other such incident has taken place in the event since then.

If a team owner becomes part of the team management, he will not be allowed to carry the phone with him. In case of an emergency, the owner will be able to make a call through the phone of the anti-corruption officer.
The Director of Anti-Corruption and Security said that the bio-secure bubble in the days of COVID-19 has made their job a little easier.
Now the players cannot meet anyone in the hotel lobby or stadium etc., so the possibility of suspicious contact has decreased. Besides, we also monitor the activities of players on social media concerning anti-corruption.
