Mahmudullah could make Test return on last minute call | Sports News

Bangladesh T20I captain Mahmudullah Riyad could be in line to join an inexperienced Test squad in Sri Lanka. However, his inclusion is pending upon BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) President Nazmul Hassan Papon.

Bangladesh will travel to Sri Lanka for two Tests without vastly experienced Shakib Al Hasan, the ex captain, as well as Mustafizur Rahman. Both have been allowed to take part in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.

Mominul Haque’s side will have a lot to answer in Bangladesh’s last series in World Test Championship 2019-21 cycle. The Tigers have lost all five matches in the competition. The latest two defeats against West Indies at home in February would certainly come haunting.

As per sources, the BCB boss Papon wants the experience of Mahmudullah in Sri Lanka. However, the batting all-rounder is still recovering from a thigh injury that he sustained in New Zealand. He was ruled out of the final T20I in Auckland where Bangladesh, led by Liton Das, fielded for the first time in 15 years without the ‘big five’ in international cricket.

Mahmudullah has not played a Test since January 2020.

An 18-member Test squad is expected to be announced by April 8. The team will fly four days later.

Pallekele International Stadium will host the two Tests starting from the 21st of this month.

Bangladesh’s probable Test squad: Mominul Haque (captain), Tamim Iqbal, Shadman Islam, Saif Hassan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim, Liton Das, Mohammad Mithun, Yasir Ali Rabbi, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Ebadat Hossain, Abu Jayed Rahi, Khaled Ahmed/Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Mahmudullah Riyad (decision on him awaiting).
