Lewis blasts 71 as West Indies flatten South Africa

Full-strength West Indies have trounced South Africa by eight wickets in the first of five T20Is in St George’s.

Evin Lewis starred with the bat after the hosts restricted South Africa to 160/6. Lewis hammered 35-ball 71 runs, having 4 fours and 7 sixes in it. He put on an 85-run stand with Andre Fletcher (30 off 19) in seven overs for the opening wicket.

Chris Gayle (32* off 24) and Andre Russell (23* off 12) chipped in to help West Indies reach the target with five overs to go. Both Gayle and Russell hit three sixes each, the latter striking his first on the first ball he faced off Kagiso Rabada.

Put into bat, Quinton de Kock gave the Proteas a good start, making 37 off 24 before falling in Russell’s first over. Skipper Temba Bavuma (22 off 20) and Heinrich Klaasen (7 off 12) struggled to break free but Rassie van der Dussen stepped up.

van der Dussen remained unbeaten on 38-ball 56, striking 4 fours and 2 sixes, as he took his side to a competitive score of 160. The rest of the South African order failed to make impact.

Fabian Allen and Dwayne Bravo picked up two wickets each for West Indies.

The teams will face off again in 24 hours time at the same venue.
