South Africa all-rounder Chris Morris says he is ‘humbled’ after becoming the most expensive auction signing in the history of the Indian Premier League.

Morris, who has played 23 Twenty20 games for South Africa and featured in seven IPLs to date, was sold to Rajasthan Royals for £1.6million at the auction on Thursday.

The stunning deal sees Morris become the most expensive signing in IPL history, surpassing the previous records held by Australia fast bowler Pat Cummins and England all-rounder Ben Stokes.

Morris said: ‘I am so humbled to be joining Rajasthan again, I had one of the best times in my cricket career here.

‘I am unbelievably happy and excited as we have a very good squad and I made lots of friend here all those years ago. I can’t wait to get going.’

Rajasthan Royals, who won the inaugural Indian Premier League in 2008, finished bottom last year, losing eight of their 14 group matches.

On the signing of Morris, co-owner Manoj Badale said: ‘I have always said the auction is a representation of what a player is valued by multiple franchises to fulfil a particular role.

‘The fact so many teams all went very hard after Chris shows he is a special player with special abilities, particularly with his death bowling. We are very excited to have him back, let’s hope he can live up to the price tag.’

New director or cricket at the Royals, the Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara, added: ‘We were targeting a player for that middle order and Morris, both in terms of his ability with the ball, his numbers across the IPL are very good, and his ability to get runs with the bat means he has a specific role to play for us.

‘We are very happy with the way things have gone, yes it was quite a high price, but at the same time the role in the team and the demand for that role plays a large part for any franchise.’
