Cricket: England’s Ben Foakes on ‘incredible’ India and Australia Test series

Wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Foakes admits England face an ‘extreme challenge’ as they prepare to take on ‘incredible’ India away from home.

England – who clinched a 2-0 series sweep in Sri Lanka earlier in the month – begin a four-match series against India on February 5.

India have not lost at home since being beaten by Sir Alastair Cook’s England in 2013, winning 12 consecutive Test series and losing just one of their last 35 red-ball matches in their own backyward.

Virat Kohli’s side also go into this series on the back of a stunning victory over Australia, as the depleted tourists clinched a 2-1 win to defy the odds and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

England and Surrey’s Foakes told ‘India are an incredible side. That win in Australia shows what they can do in all conditions.

‘It’s going to be a pretty extreme challenge but it’s one you’ve just got to look forward to and hopefully we can play some really good cricket and win.’

Asked whether the England team managed to catch the final stages of India’s win in Australia while visiting Sri Lanka, Foakes added: ‘The time worked quite well for us out there so we watched some of it.

‘It was awesome, just an incredible series. The strength in depth that India have got and the quality they showed to win that series was quite remarkable. It was great to watch.’

Over two years since his last Test appearance, Foakes admits there will be ‘excitement’ and ‘nerves’ if, as expected, he earns a recall against India.

Jos Buttler will return home following the first Test and, with Jonny Bairstow missing the first half of the tour under the ECB’s rotation policy, Foakes looks set to keep wicket in the second match in Chennai.

‘Whoever you play for, you always get that excitement and nerves,’ the 27-year-old said. ‘It’s about going with that and accepting that’s how you’re going to feel.

‘I’ll see it as a great opportunity if I do play. I obviously haven’t played for a while so I just want to prepare well, do my best and see what comes of it.’

Foakes scored 332 runs and completed 12 dismissals with the gloves in his first five Tests, including a superb century on debut against Sri Lanka.
